The strategist's art (奇门遁甲) — your favourable directions for action, wealth, rest and being seen.
What is Qi Men Dun Jia?
Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲), sometimes called the "mysterious gates", is one of China's most revered systems of strategy and timing. Unlike astrology that describes who you are, Qi Men reads direction and timing — a nine-palace "cosmic board" that shows the most favourable way to face or move when you want to push forward, build, recover or be seen. Generals used it to choose the moment and direction of battle; today it's used for launches, negotiations, study and key decisions.
Your four favourable directions
Eight "doors" sit across the eight compass directions on your plate. Four are auspicious, and the compass direction each falls in is the direction that favours that kind of move:
- Open Door (開門) — action & career: bold moves, launches, putting yourself forward.
- Life Door (生門) — growth & wealth: building, earning, anything you want to grow.
- Rest Door (休門) — rest & study: recovery, reflection, learning, repair.
- Scenery Door (景門) — reputation & visibility: being seen — presentations, interviews, launches.
Qi Men is hour-based, so it uses your birth time (in true solar time) — add yours for the most precise directions. It's the fifth of the five traditions a full Complete Synthesis reading weaves together; see how the systems compare in the five systems guide.
