BaZi gets most of the Western attention, but there's a second great Chinese system that many practitioners consider even more detailed: Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数), the "Purple Star Astrology." Historically it was the astrology of the imperial court. Here's the plain-English version.
The twelve palaces
Where BaZi reads your elemental balance, Zi Wei reads your life as a map. It divides your destiny into twelve palaces, each governing a domain of life:
- Self (命) · Siblings · Spouse/Romance · Children · Wealth · Health
- Travel/Opportunities · Friends · Career · Property · Fortune/Wellbeing · Parents
Think of it as a floor plan of your life, room by room.
The stars
Into these palaces, the system places stars — the most important being Zi Wei (the "Emperor" star) itself, plus a cast of others like Tian Ji, Tai Yang, Wu Qu, Tian Tong, and so on. Each star has a character: some bring leadership, some wealth, some intellect, some volatility.
The reading comes from which stars sit in which palace, and how bright they are. A powerful, well-placed star in your Wealth palace reads very differently from a dim or troublesome one. Your Self palace and its ruling star describe your core nature — your "soul lord."
The 四化 transformations
Zi Wei adds a dynamic layer called the Four Transformations (四化): each year (and in your birth chart), certain stars are activated into states of prosperity (禄), power (权), fame (科), or trouble (忌). This is how the system reads timing and turning points — and, in compatibility, how one person's energy lands in another's life palaces.
How it complements the others
Zi Wei's gift is domain specificity. Western astrology tells you your psychology; BaZi tells you your elemental needs and timing; Zi Wei tells you, palace by palace, which areas of life are bright and which need work. Read together, they cross-check each other — a strong career signal in all three is far more trustworthy than one alone.
